Manipulating the Jellyfish: Towards a Strategy for Control of Blooms

Ralph J. Greenspan

The negative and extensive impact of jellyfish blooms on ocean ecosystems is a cause for alarm. We propose to develop a laboratory model for studying, understanding, and manipulating jellyfish biology, which will allow for the first functional molecular studies of their behavior. The outcome of these studies will be the identification of mechanisms capable of serving as targets for species-specific efforts to block jellyfish blooms and restore ecosystem balance.
